SURVIVORS 1975 tv series seen on DVD

Some while back I posted some 'blog entries re the 1970's tv SURVIVORS
URL LINK The link seems defective so just go manually to "epguides.com" Made
in the UK by Terry Nation who also created DR WHO and BLAKEs 7. Recently I have
seen some more

Keep in mind this series is 30 years old. Some people might say it is
therefore "no good because it is 'dated' ". However I think it stands up
excellently

SURVIVORS is *absolutely* and *positively* THE best treatment ever of a
post-apocalypse storyline. It is very "realistic" ie what we could
reasonably expect if circumstances like this really did occur. Not until
1999 "The Last Train" miniseries, does anything come even close.

DVD sets are available from England mail/web order but are quite expensive

If you like this sort of thing, then I'd recommend this.

Recently I saw again, season one and I am currently at this very moment
halfway through season 2 (spare telly next to the computer ! ) (which I
haven't seen since the 1970's original airings in NZ)

Alas I do not own the dvds but have them on loan from a friend in Sydney and
they are due to be posted back again soon

Close to halfway through. So far 3 eps of season two I have absolutely
zero recall of, so I might have missed them on their first, and only, NZ
airings

I had of course more recently seen all of seasons one and three on very very
poor quality old videotapes

Rats rats rats rats seem to be the biggest problem of all followed by wild
dogs

Yet from a "Permaculture" perspective its a shame these can't be turned
into a useful resource, indeed one which "you open the door and they simply
walk into the cookpot" so to speak

Pigs eat anything alive or dead and chickens almost so. My hens will hunt
down kill and eat live mice and even small rats which drown in the
waterbucket

Diseases from the fleas on Rats is a big thing in SURVIVORS (working on the
reasonable assumption that this is accurate)

However some form of rat trap which keeps them isolated, then drops them
straight into a cookpot of boiling water, (killing rats and fleas instantly)
a seive conveyer like a chip fryer could even lift them out of the water and
dispense them for stock to eat, without loosing the benefit of energy and
having to re-boil again a new stockpot of water

Same for dogs too. Wild dogs are effectively 40 kg lumps of meat resource
which come running to your door ! .......big cooking pot and dump the
bastards in whole !

Pork is my least preferred animal and meat (and it's hardly Kosher or Halal)
but in a survival
situation...........especially if you have large quantities of poor quality
meat or vegetation, things humans can't or choose not to, eat. Modern pigs
breed, well almost like rabbits

Even modern grain-fed fattened pigs are fed a certain amount of "meatmeal"
type meat protein supplements

In the survivors tv show rats and dogs are such a terrible problem for them,
but they are a potentially useful resource just going utterly begging

In the original book version of Day of the Triffids the main character had
an electric fence around the settlement, with an electric fence energised
periodically from diesel generator to prevent them building up too much and
pushing the fence over

He could have had an automated factory processing Triffids for their vege
oil, allowing a small number of trifffids to simply walk in the door. The
energy to run the Triffid factory could come from their vege oil, running
the diesel genset. Again, here is a resource which will walk in the door
if you let it, yet they see it as a "problem" and devote substantial efforts
to keeping a valuable resource AWAY from them !

Not just scifi, currently similar things work in sugar cane processing
plants around the world including Qld where the waste fires boilers to give
heat, and electric generation
